Insider’s Guide to Lake Como
Darlings, there is nowhere on earth quite like Lake Como. Grand Belle Époque villas rise straight from the water, bougainvillea spills over stone walls, and the light does something here I have never seen anywhere else, dancing across the lake as though it were performing just for you. It is a place that holds you completely from the very first moment, and one I return to again and again, both for myself and for the clients lucky enough to let me plan it for them.
Need to Know
Currency: Lake Como is in Italy, so the Euro (EUR) is used. Cards are widely accepted at hotels, restaurants, and shops, though smaller cafes and market stalls in the lakeside villages may prefer cash. Tipping isn't expected but rounding up or leaving a little extra for excellent service is always welcome.
Languages: Italian is the official language, though Lake Como sees enough international visitors that English is fairly common in hotels and restaurants, especially in Bellagio, Como town, and Varenna. Still, a few pleasantries go a long way with locals.
Key phrases: ciao (hello/goodbye, informal), buongiorno/buonasera (good morning/evening), arrivederci (goodbye, formal), scusami (excuse me), grazie (thank you), prego (you're welcome/please).
Airports: Most travelers fly into Milan, either Malpensa (MXP) or Linate (LIN), both around an hour's drive from the lake. Milan Malpensa has extensive international connections, including direct flights from major US cities. Bergamo (BGY) is a workable budget alternative, particularly for those connecting through other parts of Europe first.
Transportation: A car offers the most flexibility for exploring the smaller villages and hillside towns, though the lake's famous ferries and hydrofoils are a scenic and practical way to move between Como, Bellagio, Varenna, and Menaggio without the winding, often congested roads. Private boat transfers are a favorite for those wanting a more elegant way to arrive at their villa or hotel.
Best time to visit: May -June is pure magic. The gardens are in bloom, the lake is still and hotels are at their most elegant. Late September is equally divine, warm and golden with a quieter, more intimate atmosphere. July - August are lively, book well in advance. April can be unpredictable weather, and January through March many restaurants and hotels close for the season
Ideal length of stay: Three to four days is ideal to properly experience the lake, splitting time between Bellagio's charm, Como town's lively piazzas, and a quieter village like Varenna or Torno for a taste of local life.
Where to Stay
Passalacqua
If I had to choose just one hotel on Lake Como, it would be Passalacqua. In fact, it remains not only my favourite hotel on the lake, but comfortably one of my five favourite hotels anywhere in the world—and I don't say that lightly. From the moment you arrive, it feels less like checking into a hotel and more like being welcomed into the most beautiful private Italian villa imaginable. With just twenty-four individually designed rooms, every detail feels deeply personal. The staff have an extraordinary ability to anticipate your needs, remembering the smallest preferences and making every guest feel genuinely cared for. The terraced gardens tumble gracefully towards the lake, the views are breathtaking at every turn, and sunset from the terrace is one of those moments that stays with you long after you've returned home. Having been named the World's Best Hotel, Passalacqua has become one of the most sought-after addresses in luxury travel. I always encourage my clients to book at least six months in advance—often longer for the summer season.
Grand Hotel Tremezzo
There are iconic hotels and then there is Grand Hotel Tremezzo. I’ve had the pleasure of staying her, and it captures everything people dream Lake Como to be—timeless elegance, impeccable service and just the right amount of old-world glamour. Its beautiful Art Nouveau façade overlooks the lake in one of Como's most spectacular settings, while the famous floating swimming pool has become one of the most recognisable images of the destination. The immaculate gardens are reason enough to visit, and I never tire of wandering up to the perfectly kept grass tennis courts, which enjoy some of the finest views on the property. If your budget allows, choose one of the lake-facing rooms. Waking up to that view each morning is an experience in itself. It was hard for me to leave my room each day because of how decadent it was
Il Sereno Lago di Como
For those whose style leans more contemporary than classic, Il Sereno is simply exceptional. Having stayed here myself, what impresses me most is how effortlessly it balances bold modern architecture with the timeless beauty of Lake Como. Designed by Patricia Urquiola, every space feels calm, understated and beautifully considered, allowing the lake itself to remain the true star. The waterfront terraces seem to float above the water, creating an atmosphere of complete tranquillity, while the Michelin-starred dining has become a destination in its own right. This is the hotel I recommend to clients looking for a more contemporary interpretation of Lake Como—minimalist, sophisticated and quietly luxurious.
Villa d'Este, Cernobbio
Few hotels in Europe possess the history and prestige of Villa d'Este. There is a timeless grandeur here that simply cannot be recreated. An evening spent dining on the candlelit veranda overlooking the lake is one of Lake Como's great pleasures, while the famous floating swimming pool and magnificent Renaissance gardens remain among the property's most celebrated features. For those seeking classic Italian luxury at its very finest, Villa d'Este remains an enduring icon.

Where to Shop
Como town's silk boutiques are legendary, home to some of the finest silk in the world, and I always send clients out with a scarf, a tie, or a dress they will treasure for years. Grand Hotel Tremezzo's own boutique is beautifully curated and worth a browse even if you are not staying there.
Azalea, Silk of Como, Bellagio
The boutique I would make a beeline for. Established in 1960 on Bellagio's steep Salita Serbelloni, Azalea has built its reputation on limited edition silk pieces designed and produced locally in the Como region, the kind of authentic craftsmanship that tends to matter more to my clients than a recognisable logo. Think silk scarves, silk kaftans, cashmere wraps, and silk dresses, each one carrying real provenance.
Nosetta
One of Lake Como's most exciting modern luxury names. Their handbags are made in Italy, inspired by the lake itself, and still wonderfully under the radar, worn by the kind of stylish traveller who prefers quiet luxury to an obvious logo. I think of it as Como's answer to Metier or DeMellier.
Nene, Bellagio
A favourite for anyone after independent Italian design rather than international labels. The boutique champions Made in Italy names and mixes established designers with emerging ones, a lovely way to bring something genuinely local home. Beyond clothing, Bellagio's art galleries and antique dealers carry original works, prints, and sculpture by local artists, Varenna's artisan workshops turn out beautiful hand thrown ceramics and pottery, and small home goods studios around the lake produce hand woven linens, locally crafted glassware, vintage Murano pieces, and beautifully made wooden objects, wonderful for anyone looking to bring the feeling of this lake home with them.
What to Experience
Bellagio
Often described as the jewel of Lake Como, Bellagio is every bit as charming as you've imagined. Take your time wandering the enchanting Salita Serbelloni, the town's famous cobbled lane, lined with elegant boutiques, artisan shops and hidden cafés. Lose yourself amongst the narrow streets where every corner reveals another picture-perfect view. No visit would be complete without stopping for a gelato at Gelateria del Borgo—a ritual rather than a recommendation. Finish with a leisurely stroll along the lakeside promenade, where the beauty of Lake Como encourages you to slow down and savour every moment. One of the busiest areas on the lake so I recommend you go on the early.
Varenna
For those seeking a gentler pace, Varenna is effortlessly romantic and, in my opinion, one of the lake's most enchanting villages. Spend time exploring the exquisite lakeside gardens of Villa Monastero before wandering along its peaceful waterfront, noticeably quieter than neighbouring Bellagio. The colourful houses cascading towards the lake create some of the most beautiful views on Como, while its charming cafés invite you to linger over an espresso or glass of wine with absolutely nowhere else to be.

If there is one experience on Lake Como that I consider completely non-negotiable, it is a private boat charter.
Whether you choose a timeless Riva or a beautifully crafted Venetian wooden boat, there is simply no finer way to experience the lake. With your own captain at the helm, allow the day to unfold at an unhurried pace as you discover Como from its most enchanting perspective.
My perfect day on the water would include:
A sunset cruise accompanied by an aperitivo as the golden light dances across the lake.
Swimming in secluded coves, far from the crowds.
Gliding past the magnificent villas that grace the shoreline—many belonging to international celebrities which are truly appreciated only from the water.
Arriving by boat at Villa del Balbianello, one of Lake Como's most iconic estates. Perched dramatically on its wooded peninsula, it has starred in both Casino Royale and Star Wars. Stepping onto its tiny private jetty is one of those unforgettable Lake Como moments.

Where to Eat
For me, dining on Lake Como is about so much more than the food. It is long lunches that become lazy afternoons, sunset aperitivo that somehow turn into dinner, and tables where the view competes with what arrives on your plate. My advice is always to book ahead, request a terrace whenever possible, and never rush the experience.
Long, Leisurely Lunches
One of my favourite lunch spots on the lake is the Veranda at Villa d'Este. There is something wonderfully timeless about sitting beneath the grand colonnade with a glass of crisp Italian white, watching elegant wooden boats glide across the water. It is sophisticated, beautifully executed and quintessentially Lake Como.
Another favourite is Bar Giardino at the Royal Victoria in Varenna. Perfect after a morning wandering the village, its lakeside terrace is wonderfully relaxed and has some of the prettiest views in Varenna. It is the sort of place where lunch effortlessly drifts into the afternoon.
Whenever I stay at Passalacqua, I always make time for lunch on the terrace. Much of the produce comes straight from the hotel's own kitchen garden, and the menus celebrate the very best seasonal ingredients. Like everything at Passalacqua, it feels thoughtful, understated and utterly beautiful.
Da Giacomo al Lago has become something of a Lake Como institution and is one I recommend time and time again. The seafood is exceptional, the setting couldn't be more idyllic, and if you can arrive by boat, even better. It is one of those quintessential Lake Como lunches you'll remember long after you've returned home.
Another wonderful choice is La Terrazza Gualtiero Marchesi at Grand Hotel Tremezzo. Refined without ever feeling formal, it pairs magnificent lake views with elegant Italian cuisine inspired by one of Italy's greatest culinary legends.
Aperitivo
One of my favourite rituals in Italy is aperitivo, and nowhere does it quite like Lake Como.
An Aperol Spritz on the terrace at Hotel Vittoria as the sun begins to set is one of life's simple pleasures. The views are spectacular, the atmosphere is wonderfully relaxed and it is the perfect way to begin an evening.
For something a little livelier, I also love the terrace at Passalacqua. Watching the light change over the lake with a perfectly mixed Negroni or glass of Franciacorta in hand is pure Italian magic.
Dinner
For a truly elegant evening, it is hard to look beyond Villa d'Este. Dinner on the veranda is one of the great Lake Como experiences. Candlelight, impeccable Lombard cuisine, an exceptional wine list and flawless service combine to create an evening that feels effortlessly glamorous.
Il Sereno al Lago offers something entirely different, yet equally memorable. Its striking contemporary design by Patricia Urquiola provides the perfect backdrop for one of the lake's finest dining experiences. The floating terraces, Michelin-starred cuisine and beautifully understated interiors make it a destination in its own right.
If you're looking for somewhere with a more local feel, I always recommend Trattoria del Porto. Warm, welcoming and full of character, it serves generous portions of authentic regional dishes and has exactly the sort of neighbourhood atmosphere that makes you want to linger over another bottle of wine.
For those who enjoy exceptional fine dining at II Gatto Nero , Ristorante Materia or the Kitchen in Cernobbio are both well worth the short journey. Creative, elegant and beautifully executed, it has quietly become one of the most respected restaurants on the lake.
For a special celebration or if you simply want an unforgettable meal, reserve a table at Ristorante Mistral at the Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni in Bellagio. With its Michelin star, exquisite tasting menus and spectacular setting overlooking the lake, it is one of Lake Como's true culinary highlights.

Trips to Add On
Milan
Just under an hour by car or train, and worth it even for a single night. The Duomo, the Quadrilatero della Moda for serious shopping, and dinner in Brera make for a glamorous bookend to a Como stay, whether you are arriving or departing through Malpensa or Linate.
Lugano & the Swiss Lakes
Cross into Switzerland in under an hour and the entire mood shifts, tidy, Alpine, effortlessly elegant. Lugano's lakefront promenade and easy funicular up to Monte San Salvatore make a lovely full day out, and it is a nice way to say you holidayed in two countries without ever really trying.
Bergamo's Citta Alta
A walled hilltop old town about an hour from Como, reached by funicular from the lower city. Fewer crowds than Como itself, wonderful for an afternoon of wandering, a proper Italian lunch, and views over the plains that stretch all the way to Milan on a clear day.
Lake Maggiore & the Borromean Islands
A different, quieter lake character just under an hour away. Isola Bella and Isola dei Pescatori are best reached by private boat, and the palazzo gardens on Isola Bella are some of the most beautiful in Italy, a lovely contrast to Como's own villas.
Franciacorta Wine Country
Italy's answer to Champagne, and barely an hour southeast of Como. A day of cellar visits and long lunches among the vineyards makes a wonderful, slower add on for clients who love their wine as much as their scenery.
